Work is already underway to repurpose the empty former Debenhams store. A major retailer is expected to be confirmed soon to occupy the mall and first floor levels of the former department store.
This leaves space on the top floor for a new destination attraction which offers a unique blend of culture, art, entertainment, street food and beverages, with an internal events space.
The top floor of the former Debenhams department store will become a new destination attraction for the city.
We are in detailed discussions with operators of a similar, highly-regarded destination elsewhere in the UK. They are keen to bring their successful mix of music, art, street food and entertainment to the north east.
As the sketch above shows, with selected internal and external changes we can make an exciting new space.
Enhanced acoustic protection will be provided to create a performance area suitable for live music and DJ sets.
To accommodate this there will be a modest increase in the height of the roof. By removing a small section of the building’s roof, we can also create an external recessed seating area, under a retractable roof. Neither of these amendments will be visible from street level.
The existing main Newgate Street entrance to the former Debenhams will be amended to provide express lifts which go directly to the top floor. Three staircase accesses will also be provided. The entrance and exit to the new destination space will be separate to Eldon Square and neighbouring retailers.
